Blues Memories from Our Readers

Blues Memories from Our Readers is a moderated collection of first-person stories about Southern California blues concerts, festivals, and club nights — the kind of recollections that don't usually make it into official event listings but make up a lot of the real texture of a music scene. Did you catch Etta James or Willie Dixon at Topanga in the 1980s? Remember a specific Battle of the Blues Bands night in Long Beach, or a club show that isn't documented anywhere else? This is where we're collecting those memories.

This isn't an open comments section. Every submission is read by an editor before it's published, mainly to keep the page readable and on-topic, and partly because we try to hold even reader memories to the same honesty standard as the rest of this site — we're not going to publish a story that claims something we have clear reason to believe didn't happen, and if a submission makes a specific factual claim (a date, a lineup, a venue) that contradicts what we've documented elsewhere on the site, we'll either ask the submitter for more detail or note the discrepancy rather than publish it as settled fact. Stories are shared as personal recollections, not as independently verified history, and we label them that way wherever they appear.

How to submit a story

To share a memory, use the contact address on our about page, and let us know it's a guestbook submission. Tell us roughly when and where the memory is from — even an approximate year and venue helps us place it alongside the rest of our coverage — keep it reasonably short, and let us know if you'd like your name attached or would rather stay anonymous or go by a first name only. We moderate for length, relevance, and basic civility; this isn't the place for disputes with other commenters, promotional posts for unrelated events, or claims about living people that we can't support.

We're especially interested in memories tied to specific, dateable moments: a particular year's Topanga Blues Festival, a Battle of the Blues Bands night in Long Beach, a club show at a venue that may no longer exist. Those kinds of details — even small ones, like what the weather was doing or who you went with — are exactly what's missing from the official record, and they're what make this page worth reading rather than just another events list.

Published memories will sit alongside the rest of our coverage of the region's blues history, including our photo and event archive of past festivals and competitions. If you're new here, the home page has an overview of everything this independent journal covers — festivals, band competitions, a running calendar, and a directory of blues organizations and resources across Southern California. We'll be publishing reader memories here as they come in and clear moderation, so check back periodically to see new stories as they're added.
