Southern California Blues Event Archive
This page indexes an archive of stories and photographs from past Southern California blues events — festivals, competition nights, and club showcases — that we're documenting as part of this independent journal. Where we use photography here, we're using properly licensed or rights-cleared images; we are not reproducing the Southern California Blues Society's own archival photos or using them without permission, since those belong to SCBS, or to the photographers who shot them for SCBS, not to us.
The events we're working through include the Topanga Blues Festival, held annually at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum since 1982; the Battle of the Blues Bands competition nights historically held in Long Beach, which fed winners into the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge in Memphis; and a handful of smaller club showcases that the Southern California Blues Society ran over the years, including a "Battle of the Blues Divas" vocal competition and an "LA Juke Joint and Blues Fest" club night. Those smaller, one-off club events are harder to document with confidence — venue listings for them are thin, and in several cases we could only confirm that an event existed in some form, not every detail of when or where a specific edition took place.
What's here so far
Two archive entries anchor this section right now: a recap tied to the Battle of the Blues Divas competition, and a page on the LA Juke Joint and Blues Fest club night. Both carry a 2009–2010-era date in their page names, reflecting the period the underlying listings appear to be from; we flag that these specific dates are not independently confirmed beyond the archival material we sourced, and we've noted that caveat directly on each page rather than presenting the dates as settled fact.
For the festival's full, better-documented lineup history — including decades of major-headliner bookings at Topanga — see the past events archive, which is more thoroughly sourced than the smaller club nights covered here. We'll keep adding properly credited images and verified event write-ups to this archive over time; if you have licensed photography from any of these events and are willing to let us use it with credit, our contact page explains how to reach the editorial team.
As with the rest of this site, nothing here should be read as an official SCBS publication or a current SCBS photo archive — it's our own independently assembled record of a regional music scene, built from public listings, news coverage, and licensed images.
